With 0:00 showing on the clock, the Bugeaters and all of Nebraska celebrated a Big 12 Championship win over Texas 12-10, Saturday night in Dallas. Wait. The referee waved his hands over his head and then motioned for Nebraska to clear the field. And then, after an official review, the referee adds one second to the play clock and Texas now has a shot at a game winning field goal. If you prematurely celebrated the victory with the rest of the Nebraska team, don't shame yourself. It's that very desire to be a champion that makes us what we are, the greatest fans in college football. So when Texas kicker Hunter Lawrence put it through from 46 yards and crowned Texas, we knew what they were feeling because we just felt it ourselves.
The Bugeaters allowed 13 points and 202 yards to a Texas offense that coming into the game averaged 40 ppg and 400 yards. Heisman hopeful, Colt McCoy was sacked 9 times and passed for 184 yards with three interceptions. The should be Heisman winner, Ndamukong Suh dominated the game recording 12 tackles and 4.5 sacks. The defense played with scrappy confidence and made a strong claim for being the best in the nation.
The offense was, has been all year, and is the issue for the Bugeaters. The Bugeaters managed only five first downs the entire game and gained a measly 106 yards. No team, no matter how good the defense, wins a BCS football game with that kind of offensive output. Offensive coordinator Shawn Watson maybe looking for a job this off season. I would argue he deserves one more year to put it all together, but it sure is frustrating at this point to watch the Bugeater offense.
The last second field goal and win for Texas puts them into the National title game against Alabama. Nebraska will likely play a PAC 10 foe, in the Holiday Bowl.
Finishing the season with a 9-4 record and loss in the Big 12 Championship game, the Bugeaters are definitely headed in the right direction.
